Holiday Notes from the Chair
Just when
you think you’ve almost made it through this unbearable season with only minor
emotional scarring and that last trip to the Wine & Spirits store (with the
“casual” employees) didn’t put you over the edge, they start to infest your mailbox. And then those violent holiday
tendencies start to resurface again.
I’ve tried
to be good this year, too. Not one fruitcake returned though a thoughtless
friend’s front window and I haven’t even set one of the dogs on a gaggle of
terrified carolers. (I do miss watching them scatter and slip on the ice.)
Don’t try
acting like you don’t know what we’re talking about, either. It’s those overly
optimistic Christmas letters extolling the fictional virtue of your family
intended only to make our pathetic lives pale in comparison. Don’t pretend you
don’t send them, because we know you do.
Does anyone
really care if baby Timmy mastered the art of toilet training at the age of three
weeks (unless he’s at my house)? Our lives would still be complete if we never
knew that little Suzy translated the Bible from the original Aramaic? And what
made you think we really wanted to hear about your visit to Dollywood?
Do you
really want to make everyone happy this holiday season? Don’t even think about
sending a Christmas letter, or better yet, how about penning a holiday missive
that makes us all feel a little bit better about ourselves. The Board suggests
something along the lines of this:
Dear Friends and Fellow Wine Lovers,
We’d apologize for sending you this impersonal form
letter. The truth is we’re not that close, and you’re not nearly important
enough for us to take the time to write you each a personal letter, but, the
Board wanted to keep you up to date, so . . .
They did it! Tim and Brittany finally got those indoor
facilities installed in the doublewide. They’ll be no more running across Route
19 to the Get Go in the middle of night for Brittany. She got pretty mad when
her butt froze to the toilet seat last time, and she had to sit there all
night. As Tim always likes to say, “Nothing’s too good for my blushing bride!”
I’m sure you saw Leeanna on that episode of
"Cops" as she was chasing Rich down the street with a cast iron
frying pan and wearing nothing but her underwear. She wasn’t too happy when she
caught him messing around with the Barolo in the wine cellar, but Rich was
proud to say that he was the one that bought her those “If you can read this I
must be drunk” panties last Christmas.
Terry is still working with the decontamination crew down
at the nuclear plant, but it’s not so bad. With all those glowing body parts, Pat
says that if he takes his clothes off and she hangs a few ornaments on him,
it’s even better than the Christmas tree down at the Moose Lodge.
And thank the Lord! Kathleen will be out on parole in
time for Christmas. She swears that she was just helping out when the police
caught her running from the Suds ‘n Duds with all those wet clothes. Some folks
say that girl won’t amount to much, but we think she’s got a real future on the
Liquor Control Board.
More good news! Dennis is finally coming home from the
hospital. You may have already heard about his unfortunate “No Ragrets” tattoo
incident. Of course, the infection set in soon after he tried to make the
corrections himself with a soldering iron.
Earlier this November, Metha shot her first doe up there
in Butler, and she and Bob now are the proud owners of a freezer full of
venison. At least it’s not opossum or
squirrel. So far Bob says his favorite
meal is spaghetti and deer balls. They can’t decide, though, whether it goes
better with Franzia or Mad Dog.
Matt and Carol are planning to have the traditional
holiday meal again. No one carves a corn
dog like Matt, and with Carol adding the Cheez Whiz decorations in the shapes
of stars and Christmas trees, life doesn’t get any better!
The highlight of my year was my trip to Branson, MO. That
Elvis impersonator got me so choked up I went right out and had “Hunka Burning Love”
tattooed right across my right cheek. Long live the King!
As I sit here thinking about all the trials and
tribulations our wonderful Board faced last year, and all of our collected
accomplishments, I can’t help but find myself comforted by the thought that we
don’t have to see any of you this season, and we’re not nearly as bad as the
Kardashians.
Yours truly,
Fearless Leader and Your Executive Board
Now, not
only would I be proud to be part of such an intriguing group, or have such
interesting friends, but one can’t help but step a little bit lighter after
reading something as uplifting as that letter right smack in the middle of a
stressful holiday season. So unless you
can come up with something similar, stop sending Christmas letters! If you
don’t, I’ll tell Tim and Brittany you want them to move in with you!
Cheers!

Notes from the Chair
It was a
trip through the wonderland that is Temecula!
Thanks to Barbara Johns for a great presentation (and to her lovely
assistant, Jeff), and thanks to Bernard and Peggy Grandjacques for being such
talented hosts. The food and the wines
were delicious!
Most of the
wines were donated by The Hart Family Winery, so please visit their website at
Noteworthy Items
In
accordance with our new wine glass policy, many of the members received their
new wine totes and six glasses. If you
were not in attendance, yours will be distributed at an upcoming tasting. You have the option to decline the glasses,
but we’d like you to have the bag.
The next
tasting will be our annual Holiday Party on Wednesday, January 14, 2015. The event will be at Marty’s Market in the
Strip District. Appetizers at 6:30 and
dinner at 7:15. Keep watching for more
details.
You still
have time to vote for Member of the Year!
The winner will be announced at the Holiday Party.

The Wines of Temecula
Our tasting this month will be presented by Barbara Johns. She has been a member of the American Wine
Society for 15 years, and previously served 3 years as the Program Chair and
Vice President of the Pittsburgh Chapter.
Barbara is also a certified wine judge, having completed the
3-year program through the AWS. She has
also attended a number of wine education classes and conferences, and has
participated in a number of wine lectures and wine competitions.
She enjoys wine tasting and touring, and has visited
wineries throughout U.S. and overseas in Austria, France, Germany, Italy,
Portugal, (and even China). But what she
enjoys the most about wine is the unique experience that each bottle brings.
Temecula Valley has been growing wine grapes since the late
1700s, but it was another 200 years before the industry truly took hold,
gaining AVA status in 1984. Tempered by coastal fog, this warm region is best
known for its Italian and Rhône varietals and its annual Balloon and Wine
Festival.
Our tasting of the Wines of Temecula will be held on
Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at the Evergreen Community Park, 3430 Evergreen Rd,
Pittsburgh, PA 15237 at 7:00 pm. The
cost for the event is $10 for members and $15 for guests. Make your reservations now. Please respond to:

Notes from the Chair
What a wonderful tasting we had! Thanks to Ryta Mirisciotti for guiding us through the intracasies of French wines. I learned quite a bit, as I’m certain we all did. The food that paired with the wines was fantastic, and a big thanks to Susan Coleville and all of her helpers.
If you weren’t able to make the tasting, I’d like to let you know about some of the changes that will be happening with the Chapter. (If you were there, a little review never hurts!)
Wine Glasses
We will be changing the procedure that we currently use for the distribution of wine glasses. Throughout the next few tastings, we’ll be distributing six wine glasses to each member along with a handy carry bag. The bag will be imprinted with the AWS logo, and can be used to transport wine bottles as well. This will relieve the glass washing chore that a few members have been bearing. You can bring your own glasses to each tasting, and then take them home with you when the tasting is finished. If there is an occasion when you don’t have your glasses with you, or if there are new members or guests, the Chapter will provide plastic glasses for convenience.
Board Member Elections
At the next tasting, we will be voting for your Board Members for the 2015 Season. As of today, there are very few nominations for each of the Board positions. The current Program Committee members, and the current Secretary, have informed us that they will not be accepting a nomination for the upcoming year. So, we need your help! Please take a few moments and make a nomination for at least those two positions. The nominee can be any active member. The link is:
Member of the Year
As I mentioned at the past several meetings, we will be announcing the Member of the Year at our Holiday Tasting in January. We have had 22 votes so far from a membership that numbers close to 100. If you haven’t cast your vote, the link is:
AWS Pittsburgh Chapter Web Site
There are soon going to be additional tabs on the AWS Pittsburgh blog spot. We are adding a tab for Recipes, Links, and Wine Tips. We would love to have your input on these.
If you have a favorite recipe, please send it to me. Also, if you have a request for a recipe, let us know. You can send your thoughts to chair.aws.pittsburgh@gmail.com
If there is a winery that you are fond of, or would like to have their website posted on our Links page, you can send it to the same email address.
The Wine Tips tab will include useful information in any area of wine appreciation. If you have any ideas, please let us know.
Guests
Like any organization, we need to grow to survive. To that end, we are instituting a Guest Policy change that we think you’ll enjoy! We’re all proud of our Chapter, and we like to let others know what a good time we have at our tastings. If you feel the same way, we hope that you’ll bring a guest to a future tasting. According to American Wine Society rules, a person can be a guest at three tastings. After that, they would be required to join the AWS. If that person is your guest, and joins both the National Society and our local chapter, you will receive your next year’s membership in the Pittsburgh Chapter for free! It’s that simple!
As always, the Board is here to serve the membership. We hope that we’re doing a good job, and that you’re enjoying the tastings. All board members are open to your ideas and suggestions.

different regions of France while pondering the changes in packaging, flavor

approach to gaining market share in the US!
We will taste wines

regions as well as some lesser known areas (who, by the by, are the ones
experimenting with more chic labeling, American palate profiles, and the
like.)

Nominations
Nominations for Member of the Year
We have revived an honor that was given to the member who
was the person that provided the most to our chapter. The Member of the Year does not have to be a
Board Member. You may nominate any
active member of the Chapter.
The votes will be tallied and we will make the announcement
of the award at the first tasting in January of 2015. If you have not made a nomination for Member
of the Year, we ask that you take a few moments and do so. The link below will take you directly to the
survey. This is a safe site, and does
not collect any personal information from your computer.
Nominations of Board Members for the 2015 Season
Please take a few moments to nominate those that you think
might best serve our Chapter in the various board positions. You may nominate more than one person for
each position. The vote will be held at
the November tasting, and the newly elected members will begin their terms in
January of 2015.
Just click on the link below to be directed to the
nomination survey. If the link doesn’t
work, copy and paste it into your browser.
If more than one member in a household shares a computer, simply close
the survey after the first person completes their nominations and then open the

What is The National
Tasting Project?
The NTP is a wine
education and tasting opportunity for AWS Chapters across the US.
Each year the NTP committee chooses a theme and selects several widely
available wines that show different styles within the
theme. Chapters hold tastings to sample the wines and then see
how their ratings compare to other AWS chapters.

Bereavement
AWS and friends;
I am deeply saddened to pass on some sad news to you. Perhaps the best way to say this is to include the message from Karen Wayner, past chair of Pittsburgh East, from her email.
“Curt Skerl passed away yesterday. He was attending a wedding in Philadelphia with our good friend Jerry Knutson Friday of last week. The ceremony went as planned, the drinks and appetizers were perfect. As everyone was seated for dinner Curt fell over to the floor. He had a massive heart attack and even thought there was a doctor right there who worked on him immediately he never regained consciousness. He was taken to the hospital and at that time he was alive but barely. They were concerned about oxygen deprivation among other things. He was put into a medically induced coma for a day and when they decreased the drugs he never really came out of it. He was breathing thru a ventilator. Yesterday they determined that he was brain dead and stopped the ventilator.
What a shock. Curt was 56 years old. The last pictures of Curt taken minutes before his heart attack he was happy and toasting the bride and groom with a glass of good red wine. He had no warning.....
What I was reminded of with this terrible loss - LIVE EVERY DAY TO THE FULLEST!!!!
Make today your best yet.....
Karen”

From the AWS Director of Membership Services
Dear AWS Friends,
We recognize the time and work to develop a successful chapter or grow the AWS, efforts that go uncompensated, done for the love of wine and people and commitment to the mission of the AWS.
For that reason the AWS will recognize the hard work of Chapter Chairs and Regional Vice Presidents by awarding Outstanding Chapter Chair and Outstanding RVP awards at the 2014 National Conference in Charlotte.
This will augment our existing Member Of The Year Award, a lifetime achievement award.
It is no overstatement to say to that without the work of these folks, the AWS wouldn’t be here and because of them and their work at the local level, AWS membership is growing and we continue to add new chapters at a rate of about one per month.
Nominations may come from any AWS member and will be accepted at the national office of through July 30. Nominations should include a written description of how the nominee meets the criteria below. Award recipients will be notified in August and they, or a designee, may receive the award at the national conference at the Awards Dinner.
The Outstanding Chapter Chairperson Award recognizes successful performance as a chapter chair and the ability to advance the mission of the AWS within and beyond their chapter including -- but not limited to -- the current calendar year.
The recipient will be selected by the AWS National Board and staff based upon, but not limited to, the following criteria:
• chapter membership growth
• innovation of programming and chapter
operations
• support and interaction with other chapters and
national office
• outreach and engagement in the
community
• Participation in the development of new
chapters
• Ability to assist existing chapters
• Ability to work collaboratively with the national
office
• Outreach and engagement in the
community
• Other extraordinary contributions to advance the
AWS mission.

It's a Road Trip!
Join us on a spring trip to the
Yadkin Valley of North Carolina to visit and sample the best of North Carolina
wineries and wines June 5-8.
The Yadkin Valley is an easy seven
hour drive from downtown Pittsburgh and is probably the fastest growing wine
region in the U.S. When we first visited
in 2001, there were less than six wineries in the area – there are now over
50! The Yadkin Valley as well as Swan
Creek areas have been designated AVAs.
We are hoping to start the weekend
off with a welcome reception on Thursday at Round Peak Vineyards located in Mt.
Airy. Then off to the motel in
Yadkinville. We plan on visiting four
wineries on Friday and again on Saturday.
I am working on us touring the Surry Community College’s Center for
Viticulture and Enology again this year.
One of the lunches will be North Carolina Pulled Pork prepared by Snooks Bar-b-q, rated as one of the
state’s five best bar-b-que shacks by Saveur
Magazine. We will also have a wine
dinner with winemakers in attendance to talk about their particular wine being
served with each course.
We are also invited to the home of
Tom & Linda King for a casual cook-out – and weather permitting, to swim in
their pool – so pack your bathing suits and towels. Linda is a long-time AWS member and is one of
the founders of the Pittsburgh Chapter.
She retired last year as a winemaker and consults for wineries in the
Yadkin area.
An estimated cost of around $275
per person includes all winery tasting fees, lunch both Friday and Saturday,
the cookout at the King’s residence, the winemakers’ dinner and all taxes and
gratuity. Your motel and travel costs
are your responsibility (the motel is less than $80/night).
If you are interested, please
e-mail me at kristofik432@comcast.net to
be put on the list. As soon as I have
all the particulars nailed down I will be able to give you a firm price.

Notes from the Chair
What a wonderful tasting we had on our tour through the
wines of Pennsylvania, and what a wonderful guide! Thanks, Terry, for your insights and
expertise on this area. It’s nice to
hear someone who actually knows the wineries, and the winemakers. It was, as Terry said, an evening of “Porch
Wine”, and I can’t wait till the weather warms up to sit outside and have a
glass (or two).
World Malbec Day is celebrated to commemorate the day when President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento of Argentina officially made it his mission to transform Argentina's wine industry. Back in 1853, he tasked Michel Aimé Pouget, a French soil expert, to bring over new vines. Amongst his selection, was Malbec. Sarmiento went on to become president and Malbec has become Argentina's most known varietal.
We’re celebrating a week early, but we’re celebrating! We are lucky enough to have our own Malbec
expert in John Eld, who will present a blind tasting of this many-named grape. Mary Eld and Carol Katelan are our hostesses for April. They enjoyed doing the January tasting so much that they volunteered to do it for the second time this year. Wow!! We need more members like these. Join us as we sample the wide variety of
styles and techniques used to make this versatile wine. It’s sure to be a fascinating journey!
