Notes from the Chair

What a wonderful tasting we had on our tour through the wines of Pennsylvania, and what a wonderful guide!  Thanks, Terry, for your insights and expertise on this area.  It’s nice to hear someone who actually knows the wineries, and the winemakers.  It was, as Terry said, an evening of “Porch Wine”, and I can’t wait till the weather warms up to sit outside and have a glass (or two).

World Malbec Day is celebrated to commemorate the day when President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento of Argentina officially made it his mission to transform Argentina's wine industry. Back in 1853, he tasked Michel Aimé Pouget, a French soil expert, to bring over new vines. Amongst his selection, was Malbec.  Sarmiento went on to become president and Malbec has become Argentina's most known varietal.

We’re celebrating a week early, but we’re celebrating!  We are lucky enough to have our own Malbec expert in John Eld, who will present a blind tasting of this many-named grape.  Mary Eld and Carol Katelan are our hostesses for April.  They enjoyed doing the January tasting so much that they volunteered to do it for the second time this year.  Wow!!  We need more members like these.  Join us as we sample the wide variety of styles and techniques used to make this versatile wine.  It’s sure to be a fascinating journey!
