SPECIAL COMBINED CHAPTER TASTING EVENT!

Sunday, March 24th
SPECIAL TASTING EVENT:
Franciacorta - The Other Italian Sparkling Wine

Our Regional Vice President, Rich Ryba, has arranged a Skype tasting with the Berlucchi winery at the Harmarville Comfort Inn. We have used this venue before for the Sherry tasting event and the people there are great hosts. Berlucchi is an icon in the world of Italian wine and a pioneer of the classical method in Franciacorta, whose passion gave origin to the very first Franciacorta in 1961.
We are hoping for a large turnout. Our response is an indication to this winery of how interested the American Wine Society and our region is in Franciacorta wines and in Berlucchi Winery. They are very excited about this event and we want us to reciprocate that excitement.  Specifics about the time will follow soon.
What is Franciacorta?
Most wine drinkers assume “if it’s Italian and bubbly, then it must be Prosecco”. If you like sparkling wine and Italian wines, you’re probably already know about prosecco (and Lambrusco). Well, there’s another Italian sparkling wine: Franciacorta.
If you haven’t heard of it, don’t worry. Franciacorta is one of Italy’s best kept secrets because they keep most of it for themselves. And, unlike places with a history of winemaking such as Tuscany, Franciacorta got its DOCG status as recently as 1995. But that doesn’t make it any less of a wine.  It means is there’s more to discover.
Franciacorta Is Made in The Champagne Method
Named for the region where it's produced, Franciacorta wine is made in the “Champenoise” style or Traditional Method, so Franciacorta has a lot more in common with Champagne than prosecco. That’s why you hear some refer to Franciacorta as Italian champagne. Rather than getting the sparkle from a second fermentation in the tank, as prosecco does, Franciacorta becomes carbonated during its in-bottle secondary fermentation, giving it a drier, more yeasty taste.
Don’t Call It “The Champagne of Italy"
Yes, you’ll hear Franciacorta referred to as Italian champagne. While Franciacorta winemakers take their methods from Champagne, it remains a truly Italian wine. Yes, the name means, literally, “short France,” but that’s more of a historic reference to Charlemagne than it is to Champagne.
While Franciacorta is like Champagne in that the two primary grapes used are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, they stray from the French by allowing Pinot Blanc into the mix. The production is also heavily regulated: wines can have up to 85% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Noir, and 5% Pinot Blanc and each different designation of Franciacorta is required to spend specific amounts of time, aging, and contact with the yeast.
It’s the Sparkling Wine of Choice for Italian Fashion Houses
Having been named the official wine of Milan Fashion Week several times, it’s no surprise Franciacorta wines are deeply connected to Italy’s fashion elite. That means when you see editors and celebrities sipping glasses of bubbles next to a runway, it’s almost certain those glasses are filled with Franciacorta. There’s even a designation of Franciacorta called Satèn (which must have a minimum of 50% Chardonnay and up to 50% Pinot Blanc) named for the region’s connection to Milan and the fashion industry. The Satèn style is stored at lower pressure, so its carbonation is much more smooth, like satin.
Franciacorta Is Food Friendly
As a dry sparkling wine, the pairing options for Franciacorta are pretty much endless. Polenta, delicate pastas, white fish, and roasted meats are always good options, especially considering the region’s many lakes and the fact that it’s in polenta country. Franciacorta's location in Lombardy places it in the rice bowl of Italy, which means risotto is great, too.

TIME IS RUNNING SHORT FOR THE VISIT TO ARUNDEL WINES

Lauri Boettcher has confirmed the dates of October 9 and 10 for the tour and tasting at Arundel on Friday afternoon and a catered meal Friday evening at Arundel.  On Saturday, Lauri will arrange for some wine stops in the area.

Lauri has arranged a group rate at the Holiday Inn Express for Friday night of $119 for a king room.  When we get a number, the hotel manager will set it up so each couple can make their own reservations and the discount rate will be applied.  If you would like to stay an additional night, that would be no problem.

Lauri needs a rough number within the next few weeks to get prices for the Friday night meal and arrange for the Saturday tastings, as well as the hotel.

Please reply if you want to attend.  Reply by September 8 at the latest.

Thanks for your cooperation.  Looking forward to a wonderful weekend with all our AWS Western PA chapters.

National Drink Wine Day!

Today is National Drink Wine Day! National Drink Wine Day is held every year on Feb. 18 and is a celebration for wine lovers to rejoice, relax and enjoy their favorite Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot, Shiraz, or Zinfandel in honor of the occasion.

Wine is the oldest alcoholic beverage known to man, as many experts claim it dates back to 6000 B.C. While we will never know exactly how, when and who first created wine, history does know that the making of wine spread from the region of Mesopotamia to Egypt, Greece and Rome, before moving into France, Spain, and eventually making its way to the US.

Nowadays you can't go to many restaurants or regions here in America, and across the globe for that matter, without having your own choice of hundreds of different types and flavors of wine at your fingertips. Wine drinkers will be the first to tell you that two glasses a day, two to three times a week is not only an enjoyable drink to go with dinner, but it may be very good for your health!

According to the Mayo Clinic, studies have shown that consuming red wine in moderation may improve heart health, boost immunity, and actually increases bone density. Red wine naturally contains resveratrol, which is a polyphenol compound found in certain plants and in red wine that has been shown to have antioxidant properties and has been investigated for possible anti-carcinogenic effects.

In other words it may be good for your heart health! The antioxidants in the wine may help prevent heart disease by increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol) and protecting against artery damage.

While all that sounds great remember the study is for no more than three glasses of wine for a man per day, and two glasses for the ladies. So raise a glass today wine lovers, today is your day to celebrate! If you know someone who enjoys wine, let them know about National Drink Wine Day

It's a Road Trip!

Yadkin Valley Wine Trip

Join us on a spring trip to the Yadkin Valley of North Carolina to visit and sample the best of North Carolina wineries and wines June 5-8.

The Yadkin Valley is an easy seven hour drive from downtown Pittsburgh and is probably the fastest growing wine region in the U.S.  When we first visited in 2001, there were less than six wineries in the area – there are now over 50!  The Yadkin Valley as well as Swan Creek areas have been designated AVAs.

We are hoping to start the weekend off with a welcome reception on Thursday at Round Peak Vineyards located in Mt. Airy.  Then off to the motel in Yadkinville.  We plan on visiting four wineries on Friday and again on Saturday.  I am working on us touring the Surry Community College’s Center for Viticulture and Enology again this year.  One of the lunches will be North Carolina Pulled Pork prepared by Snooks Bar-b-q, rated as one of the state’s five best bar-b-que shacks by Saveur Magazine.  We will also have a wine dinner with winemakers in attendance to talk about their particular wine being served with each course.

We are also invited to the home of Tom & Linda King for a casual cook-out – and weather permitting, to swim in their pool – so pack your bathing suits and towels.  Linda is a long-time AWS member and is one of the founders of the Pittsburgh Chapter.  She retired last year as a winemaker and consults for wineries in the Yadkin area.

An estimated cost of around $275 per person includes all winery tasting fees, lunch both Friday and Saturday, the cookout at the King’s residence, the winemakers’ dinner and all taxes and gratuity.  Your motel and travel costs are your responsibility (the motel is less than $80/night).

If you are interested, please e-mail me at kristofik432@comcast.net to be put on the list.  As soon as I have all the particulars nailed down I will be able to give you a firm price.
