They’re friendly, they’re cheap and
they’re easy!
Those
are three very good reasons that domestic red blends are some of the most
sought-after wines in the market today. Although blended wines aren’t new
(they’ve been produced for centuries all over the world) thanks to a number of
talented winemakers and, even more, clever wine marketers, these wines are an unstoppable
trend.
Why have so many wine
drinkers decided to change from varietal wines to blends? Were they tired of
keeping track of grapes and regional names? (The labels of many red blends don’t
offer much more than the name of a state.) Or was it their bright labels and
clever names (Wildebeest, Frog Prince,
Kitchen Sink) that attracted buyers, the way “critter” wines from
Australia, such as Yellow Tail and the Little Penguin, did a decade ago? Inquiring AWS Members want to know!
Dr. Gordon Gribble is a hotshot organic chemist who grew up and
got all of his degrees in West Coast wine country. He migrated east and
has been teaching at Dartmouth College since 1968 but brought his love of all
things grape to Beaver Meadow, Vermont, where he has been making award-winning
wines since 1978. He is currently #10 among the top AWS winemakers.
He even won Best of Show here at the Pittsburgh Amateur Winemaking
Competition back in 1993! More importantly, he’s Beverly’s scuba dive
buddy.
If you were at the
2016 AWS convention in Costa Mesa, California, you saw him win Double Gold and
Best of Show with a blended port. At the 2017 convention he took Best Rosé
with a blend of Muscat and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. There might be no
better resource on the how and why of blending. We welcome Gordon and we
welcome all of you to our soiree, “He
Blended Me With Science.”
