John was a private man, but also completely open about sharing all he knew about wine, wine pairings, and wine tasting, well, with just about anyone he would encounter. He had a love affair with wine. He had passion. He was the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman of the Pittsburgh Chapter for many years. If you were ever lucky enough to sit through one of his many excellent programs and had the privilege of experiencing the vastness of his wine knowledge, you left the encounter knowing more then when you walked in. The photo here was when he dressed as Ebenezer Scrooge for one of his programs next to his trusty overhead projector.
Many of us in the chapter would not know as much as we do now without his influence. He shared his knowledge outside of our chapter and taught wine and food classes at CCAC, and several local libraries.
His greatest love and passion of course was his wife, Mary who many of us love and respect for her quiet calmness, intelligence, and her culinary gifts. I know many of you will be thinking of her and reaching out to support her through this time as her friends who really are indeed family.
We will raise a glass to John Eld at our next gathering on April 13 at 7 p.m. at the Evergreen Community Center.
