If you announce at a party that you’re going to open a bottle
of Champagne people will turn their heads. If you announce that you plan to do
it with a sword, crowds will surely gather.
Napoleon
said “Champagne, in victory you deserve it, in defeat you need it.” And he
should know. As his light cavalry units stylishly charged around Europe in the
early 19th century, they drank a great deal of the stuff. Being in a
rush and not wanting to fuss with more traditional modes of cork removal, these
guys got into the habit of lopping the tops of the bottles off with their
sabers.
The art
of sabrage or “sabering” might seem quaint were it not for the fact that deftly
displaying skill at this tells everyone in your party that (a) you have a saber, (b) you aren’t afraid to use it, and (c) there’s champagne! I can
think of few reasons that are better.
Since we
live in the most litigious country on the planet, we will tell you, right
now, that under no condition does
the AWS Pittsburgh Chapter advocate you attempting to
undertake this dangerous display of bravado. Odds are that you’re
not cool enough anyway and will just end up looking like an idiot with a
fistful of glass standing in a bubbly puddle.
However, two of our members are
cool enough, and they’re going to show you how it’s done! Join us on April 11,
2018 at the Evergreen Community Center at 7:00 for some bubbly, bravado and
broken glass!
