Notes From the Chair
This past month, we were thinking inside the box! What a good time we had at the monthly meeting and tasting! Many thanks to Dennis Trumble and Kathleen Simpson for the cheese, bread and olives. And, a special “shout out” to Bob for those knife skills in slicing the cheeses, and Brittany and Tim for pouring par excellence! We have many exciting meetings and tastings planned for this year, so keep watching for the announcements in the news letter. Speaking of announcements, we’re soon going to have a new and exciting web page! And, just because we’re so hip, a Facebook page, too! Look for both sometime in the next month.
I know that it sounds like a long time from now, but now is the time to start planning to attend two upcoming events. The Pittsburgh Wine Conference and Amateur Wine Competition will be held at the Masonic Center just off of Cemetery Lane in the North Hills on Sunday March 3, 2013. The National Conference this year is in Sandusky, Ohio at the Kalahari Resort which is roughly a three hour drive from Pittsburgh. The dates are November 7 – 9, 2013.
And, even though this month’s meeting was all about alternate packaging for wine, I’m sure that some of us might still open a bottle or two that has a traditional cork closure. If you have no use for those corks, we’re going to begin recycling them at the meetings. All you need do is bring your used corks with you and deposit them in the container that we’ll provide. That’s it. We’ll take care of the rest.
I hope to see you all at the next meeting on Thursday February 14!

VALENTINE'S DAY SPARKLE
Come and join us for a "romantic" evening of sparkling wines and diverse food selections, including, of course, chocolate. In most of the world , sparklings are enjoyed with dinner, so it is a good time to be educated in matching these wines with food.
Deb Mortillaro from Dreadnaught on the Strip will walk us "lovingly" through 6 sparkling wines from 4 different regions of the world - France, Spain, Italy, and California. Two of the choices will be "true" Champagnes. One of the French Champagnes will be a very rare treat and Deb will tell us about the special Saignee method for producing this elegant Champagne. There is no better place to be on Valentine's Day than with great wines and special friends. COME and DRINK WITH US!
