Upcoming Wine Tasting Postponed

We will be postponing the April 8 Wines of the Titanic tasting until it is safe to gather together again. We don't know when we will resume meetings, but as soon as we know it is safe, we plan to pick up right where we left off!

Don't forget to tune into KDKA's Pittsburgh Today Live on Friday, March 20 between 9-10 a.m. to see our very own John Eld discuss the wines of the Titanic. Consider it a preview of coming attractions for when we meet again.

The world feels like it is shutting down a bit, so I hope you and your family are staying safe and that you have stockpiled some nice bottles of wine to sip as we navigate these trying times. Also, visit our recipes page to make some of those delicious recipes from last week and previous tastings.

Adam Knoerzer, the wine educator and owner of Burghundy.com who presented the Wines of South Africa last week is giving some online classes since gathering as a group is now being discouraged.

There are currently 5 scheduled right now, and they're hour-long sessions that tackle a topic like Chardonnay, Chile, or Pinot Noir in Oregon. The price is low ($15), and he gives an example of what he'll be tasting in case you want to "play along" at home.

During the live presentation he will cover things like history and geography as it pertains to the grape or region/style, climate, winemaking practices, key information, and, of course, taste through the wines discussed.

For more details and to book right through Adam's website, interested parties can head here:

Until we meet again, stay safe and savor life one sip at a time.

Report on Wines of South Africa - Pittsburgh Wine Experience is Cancelled - Up Next, Wines of the Titantic

The Wines of South Africa was a mind opening palate pleasing adventure.  Wine educator, Adam Knoerzer gave a memorable and informative lesson and introduction to the wine regions of South Africa, as well as the varietals currently grown there. Adam also told us about some interesting wine making techniques and current practices that South African wine makers have been using. Such an enriching experience for all!

A special thank you to Beverly Wise and Tim Barden who fed us traditional South African cuisine to accompany the wine. Each dish paired so well with the wines. Recipes will be posted to the blog soon, as so many of you requested the recipes.

The wines:

IMPORTANT NOTES:
  • The Pittsburgh Wine Experience Conference that was scheduled for Sunday, March 29 from 10 – 6 p.m. has been cancelled. All those who have registered will be notified. As you probably know, so many events have been cancelled with the potential to spread Coronavirus.
  • Our very own John Eld, wine guru will be interviewed on KDKA’s Pittsburgh Today Live between 9-10 a.m. on Friday, March 20. He will be discussing the wines of the Titanic, which also happens to be the theme of our next wine tasting on April 8. Our next tasting event may be postponed depending on how things with the spread of this virus continue. Please stay connected and we will notify you on any decisions we make.

A little something about the Wines of the Titanic:

Because no wine list survived the sinking of the Titanic, the contents of the great ship’s cellar remains an enduring mystery. Our April program (or the next time we meet) will attempt an answer to that question with a speculation on what the rich and famous passengers in first class had on their tables on that fateful voyage. HINT: They were mostly French and quite expensive! Bite sized plates from the Titantic menu will accompany the wines.
