Tasting notes - 2013 - January

Tasting of January 10, 2013
The January tasting featured seven wines in alternative packaging. Yes, the dreaded “box wine”!

In a blind tasting (which does not mean drink until you’re blind), we sampled a Moscato, a Riesling, a Malbec, an old vine Zinfandel, a Pinot Noir, a Shiraz, and a Cabernet Sauvignon. All of the wines came in three liter boxes, which are the equivalent of four standard sized bottles.

As has been our tradition since the late fifties, we voted at the end of the tasting and the favorite wine was the Bota Box Old Vine Zinfandel, followed closely by the Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon.

All of the wines are available at your local Fine Wines and Spirits stores. The price list is below, with the PLCB code numbers. As a side note, we tried to purchase the Fish Eye Moscato at the Perry Shops on Perrysville Avenue, and they only had ONE left!

Notes From the Chair

Quickly, bring me a beaker of wine, so that I may wet my mind and say something clever. - Aristophanes

Happy New Year!
I hope that you'll bear with me as I try to compose my thoughts, and pass them on to you in the monthly "Notes from the Chair".

I am nothing if not falsely modest, but I truly want to thank all of you for your trust in "electing" me to the position of Chairman. I hope that I can continue in the tradition of our former Chair persons, and help the Pittsburgh Chapter to grow and prosper. With the help of the board and our members, I'm sure that we can.

I also have hopes that we can present some different, fun, and exciting tastings for you. We have several ideas planned, but I want your feedback! If you have an idea, send me an email, give me a call, or tie a note to a rock and throw it at me.

As Jack Donaghy once said, "There are no bad ideas, only great ideas that go horribly wrong". We'll take the risk!
